Sabrina The Teenage Witch: Season Seven, What Went Wrong?
10/17/2025 | SPOILER ALERTS FOR SABRINA THE TEENAGE WITCH!
Sabrina The Teenage Witch was one of the most well known shows of the 90s and early 2000s. It was known for it's magical but realistic aspect, the humorous aunts, and the forever talking cat, Salem. But when it got to the 7th season, somehow, everything felt off. Why exactly? We thought we didn't know.
The season started from the cliffhanger left at the end of season six. Aunt Hilda met a new boyfriend named Will at the mall in the other realm, and they got engaged within days. Sabrina and Aunt Zelda tried to break them up because they feared the couple was moving too fast. But when they do, they found out Will was Hilda's soulmate. Being a witch, she was majorly affected, and 'fell to pieces.' (Witches in this show take metaphors and make it real often!) Aunt Hilda turned into a statue that fell into pieces. Sabrina and Zelda hires somebody to put her together, but the guy could not revive her. Eventually, Sabrina finds a sketchy guy that can bring statues back to life, but she has to sacrifice her own love life. So Sabrina did, and Hilda was brought back to life. Hilda and Will have their wedding at the Spellman house. Sabrina finds a cute guy who fixes her shoe but the spell becomes active at that moment, and every guy that Sabrina has ever loved came in to say something about her and then left the room. She was distraught and fell to pieces.
The final season starts, and boy was the first episode fast. Sabrina magically gets put back together and turns to find a 4th-grade looking girl. She finds out that the girl is Aunt Zelda, who gave up her adult years for her. Zelda says that she and Hilda have to go in the Other Realm now so Sabrina was on her own fully. But Salem gets to tag along with the young witch! Sabrina and her old college roomates (Without Miles) move into the Spellman house. She also gets a job at a magazine called Scorch, which she didn't have for very long. We still see Harvey, but Sabrina gets a new boyfriend named Aaron who they get engaged eventually.
Now, let's actually get into why the season sucked. It's a funny way to start the opinion off, but I think the absence of her aunts were a big part of why it was awful. It didn't feel right having the aunts not in the show anymore. Even when Sabrina went to college for seasons five and six, they were still in the show and we got to see them in every episode. But in season seven, they were completely gone. There were moments when Sabrina desperately needed help but they weren't there and my heart broke. I understand that Caroline Rhea (Aunt Hilda) and Beth Broderick (Aunt Zelda) chose to leave the show, but the show didn't need to continue. They could have made a final movie instead of a whole new season. At least Hilda appeared in the last episode, but Zelda was a candle out of all things.
Aaron was sort of a bland character. He had some personality but he was really there to be Sabrina's love interest. They got engaged really fast, which I thought was somewhat weird. You can tell that Sabrina didn't have as much feelings for him and she was just trying to gaslight herself. Roxie even mentioned that a few times, and both her and Morgan obsess with the idea of Sabrina and Harvey getting together again. Along with bland characters, they changed Sabrina a LOT. She was more responsible and pretty serious, compared to her goofy high school self. I know this is supposed to show her being an adult, but the show is called Sabrina The TEENAGE witch for a reason. She barely used her magic!
The Scorch magazine was really interesting about the seventh season however. I thought the people at the magazine were entertaining and the additional guest stars were amazing. I mean, that one time with Avril Lavigne, hello? But Sabrina quit the job after a few episodes and we don't hear about it ever again. If they kept the magazine, I think it would have made it better.
Surprisingly, the last episode made so much sense. It was Sabrina's wedding day with Aaron, but her cousin Amanda shows up and has their 'soul stones.' Sabrina finds that Aaron's soul stone wouldn't match with hers. She started having second thoughts but rejected those thoughts. In the middle of the wedding, Aaron stops in the middle of Sabrina's vows and has a private talk with her. He says that if she has doubts, she shouldn't go through with it. (What a great guy in this situation) Sabrina realizes she has feelings for Harvey and calls off the wedding. At the end, Sabrina runs out the door of the church and sees Harvey with his motorcycle. They confess again and ride off, their soulstones matching on the ground.
Even though the season had some pretty awesome moments, it was a dissapointment compared to the other seasons.
This is my favorite show, but it was hard for me to get through this season and the fourth.
I think they could have put this in a movie rather than a whole season instead.
